about

While many of the songs we wrote were about Soviet parody & political commentary, you could probably trace the interest level back to our fascination with the Berlin Wall coming down and the collapse of the Soviet ‘Empire’ within months of our first recordings. I know a lot of kids today have no idea what I’m talking about, but there once was an age where Nuclear Annihilation seemed a lot more inevitable. I don’t want to say that the system of government in Russia is all that different today, but throughout the 1990’s, Boris Yeltsin & Bill Clinton tended to give the world a better sense of optimism than the 90 years of Soviet-US relations that had preceded it.

By 1995, I was beginning to notice that Russias’ public perception had sort of morphed into a bitter, ripped-off reaction to all this ‘freedom’ stuff and a lot of articles were starting to appear about how things were better and how old timers were wanting Communism back (former KGB operative Vladimir Putin also gained popularity at this time). I’ve always had a soft spot for the more romantic ideas of Marxism - free food / enough to reasonably feed everybody - free health care - free access to a job. In very simple and stereotypical terms, all of these things are what this song is about.

In recording this version, I asked Jay Caruso to give us some Van Halen style sounds and he obliged. The Duke also joins me on vocals and drums. And Steven Cebula holds down the thumping bass line.
