As our disengagement with The Bolsheviks continued, I penned this tune almost exclusively for my solo project, The Jeff Dodge Band. It became a toss in for The Bolsheviks, "Year of the Dog", at the last moment when Clint laid down a commanding bass line (which he reprised for this version). It was a song loosely affiliated about the positivity that Magic Johnson's smile would bring you as he's torching your favorite NBA team. I think I was beginning to empathize with the trajectory Magic's career took as many homophobic NBA players made negative comments about his HIV status. And his short-lived yet awkward talk show had me really sympathetic.

At the end of the day, though, Magic would always keep on smiling throughout it all and I think that's the inspirational spirit behind this tune. When I invited Nathan Junior to contribute to this album, this was the primary vehicle I had in mind for him. Being the consummate professional, he merely took 3 one-take-jakes and decided to attack the rest of the album (YES!). Very cool sound he brought to this one, I think...
